When a ship contract is signed, a notation is inserted into the contract. This time, we will organize the contents of these notations.

First, the notations defined by the classification society are as follows.

They indicate that the ship or facility has met certain essential requirements for the classification and are listed in the Class regulations related to each rule set.

Class notations describe the structure or characteristics of the ship and are supported by technical requirements of the rules that can be clearly complied with. Sometimes, compliance with the rule requirements can be achieved by satisfactorily following ShipRight procedures (e.g. FDA, there may be other ways to demonstrate compliance with the rules).

It is important to keep in mind that not all aspects of the Class Notation requirements are based solely on an evaluation of the ship plan against the rules, and many verifications are performed on site with the presence of an inspector.

This is where the term ShipRight comes in. ShipRight is a comprehensive system of procedures aimed at ensuring a high level of safety, quality, and reliability during design, construction, and operation.

Let’s take a look at the symbol content of the letters in the Class Notation.

All ships are assigned one or more letter symbols when assigned a class, and the characters assigned to most ships are 100A1, ✠ 100A1 or ✠ ˙ 100A1.

✠ = Assigned to new ships built in accordance with the Rules of Classification and subject to regular surveys by LR and satisfactory to the Classification Committee.

✠ ˙ = Assigned to ships built under the supervision of other IACS member societies, but class notations for other ships are reviewed separately.

100 : Assigned to all ships deemed fit for seagoing service.

A : Assigned to all ships built or approved by the Classification Society and maintained in an efficient condition in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Classification Society.

1 : Defined as follows:

(a) A ship on board with anchorage and/or mooring equipment in good and efficient condition in accordance with the Rules.

(b) Ships classified for special service in good condition and efficient with approved mooring and/or anchoring equipment, as deemed fit and sufficient for the particular service by the Classification Committee.

N: Assigned to ships where the Classification Committee agrees that it is not necessary to be fitted with anchoring and/or anchoring equipment for the particular service.

T: Assigned to ships intended to perform their primary designed service functions only while at anchor, moored, towed or connected. Efficient condition, properly attached anchoring, mooring, towed or anchoring equipment, as deemed fit and sufficient for the intended service by the Classification Committee.

If deemed necessary by the Classification Committee or requested by the shipowner and agreed by the Classification Committee, a class notation will be attached to the classification characteristic assigned to the ship. This class notation will consist of one or a combination of the following: type notation, cargo notation, special tariff notation, special function notation and/or service restriction notation.

Example: `✠ 100A1 Oil Tanker F.P. 4 Tank ESP Baltic Service Ice 60°C+1B Class'.


Hull Notation

ESP : This notation (Enhanced Survey Program) is assigned to tankers, intermodal carriers, VLCCs, bulk carriers and ore carriers.

Ship Right (CM) : Mandatory for all bulk carriers or double hull tankers exceeding 190 m in length with a CSR notation and is assigned when the control of construction tolerances detailed in the ShipRight procedure is applied and verified. Ship Right ACS (B, C) This ShipRight notation (Anti-Corrosion System) is assigned when a designated area or areas are assigned. Corrosion protection procedures for the ship according to the relevant ShipRight.

B for ballast tank protective coating systems, C for cargo tank protective coating systems.

CSR : This notation is assigned to bulk carriers and double hull tankers that comply with the IACS Common Constructional Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (CSR).

BC-A, {a, b held, … {may be empty}

This class is assigned to bulk carriers designed to carry dry bulk cargo with a cargo density of 1.0 tonnes/m3 or more when all cargo holds are empty at maximum draft.

BC-B This class is assigned to bulk carriers designed to carry dry bulk cargo with a cargo density of 1.0 tonnes/m3 or more when all cargo holds are loaded.


ESN: This notation (Enhanced Survivability Notation) is assigned to non-CSR bulk carriers designed to withstand individual flooding of all cargo holds.


GRAB [X] Net thickness of the inner hull to a height of 3.0 m above the lowest point of the inner bottom, excluding the inner bottom plating, hopper tank sloping plating, transverse lower stool, transverse bulkhead plating and bilge walls, conforms to the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR).


IWS: Designated where underwater surveys are accepted in lieu of intermediate access between periodic surveys required at 5-year intervals.


The period during which the ship is: The safety of the rudder pin frame and spool clearances and pins can be verified at sea, and the stern bush clearances can be verified at sea. High resistance paint, applied to the underwater part of the hull.


LI: Designated where approved loading instruments are installed as a classification requirement.


DSPM4 : Single Point Mooring Ships where a single mooring line arrangement is provided in accordance with the assignment requirements for single point mooring may be assigned the Class Notation DSPM4 if a double mooring line arrangement is provided.


The ShipRight Notation (Corrosion Protection System) is assigned when a specific area of ​​the ship is protected from corrosion in accordance with the relevant ShipRight Procedure. The ACS( ) notation with one or more of the following relevant supplementary letters in parentheses may be assigned to the designated protected area:


B : Protective coating system for water ballast tanks.


D : Protective coating system for double skin spaces.


C : Protective coating system for cargo tanks.


C* : Where corrosion-resistant steel is used in cargo tanks.


V : Protective coating system for empty spaces.


CM : ShipRight SDA, FDA, FDA plus() , FDA ICE, FDA SPR and WDA notations. This ShipRight notation (Construction Monitoring) is assigned when the construction tolerance control detailed in the relevant ShipRight procedure is applied and verified. ShipRight notation CM is mandatory when:


The following ShipRight notations apply: SDA, FDA, FDA plus(), FDA ICE, FDA SPR and WDA.


FDA : ShipRight notation (Fatigue Design Assessment) is assigned when the fatigue performance of the hull structure is assessed in accordance with the relevant ShipRight procedure.


FDA plus : ShipRight notation (Fatigue Design Assessment Plus) is assigned when an assessment is made to a higher level of fatigue performance than that written for the FDA designation. The assessment may be based on specific trade patterns expressed in terms of the worldwide trade route defined in the relevant ShipRight procedure or the North Atlantic trade route (utilizing wave data from the IACS recommendations).


ShipRight Notation FDA Plus is followed by the number of years the vessel has been rated for a specific trade pattern, indicated in parentheses for the worldwide or North Atlantic trade routes, respectively, indicated by WW and NA. (25, NA).


FDA Ice : ShipRight Labeling (Fatigue Design Ice) is hosted when evaluating the touring performance of the hull structure when sailing in (ice) in accordance with the relevant ShipRight Procedure.


FDA SPR : ShipRight Notation (Spring Fatigue Evaluation) is assigned when evaluating the fatigue performance of the hull structure, taking into account the effects due to springs (continuous vibration response of the hull girder due to waves). Follow the relevant ShipRight Procedure.


MP : ShipRight Notation is assigned to ore carriers that have been evaluated for multi-port loading and unloading in accordance with the relevant ShipRight Procedure and are assigned the ShipRight Notation SDA.


PRDA: ShipRight Notation (Parametric Roll Design Assessment) is assigned to container ships for which parametric roll resonance assessments have been performed using a calculation procedure agreed upon by the classification society. The PRDA() notation may be assigned with an extension of one of the following relevant supplementary letters, shown in parentheses, detailing the level of assessment assigned:


1. Indicates that a parametric roll avoidance assessment has been performed.

2. Includes time domain numerical simulations to assess parametric roll risk in addition to the assessment performed at level 1.

SDA: ShipRight Notation (Structural Design Assessment) is assigned when direct calculations have been applied according to the relevant ShipRight procedure. Mandatory when applying FDA, FDA plus(), FDA ICE, FDA SPR, SLDA(), WDA1 and WDA2 ShipRight notations.

SLDA: ShipRight Notation (Slimming Load Design Assessment) is assigned when wave slimming loads and associated hull structural strengths have been directly calculated using a calculation procedure agreed upon by the LR. The SLDA() notation may be assigned with one or two of the following relevant supplementary letters, which are shown in parentheses to further describe the assessment area specified:

B: Slimming load and hull strength assessment for the bow flare area of ​​the vessel.

S: Slimming load and hull strength assessment for the stern counter area of ​​the vessel.

WDA1: ShipRight notation (Whipping Design Assessment Level 1) is specified when assessing the dynamic response of the hull structure due to wave impact loads (Whipping) in accordance with the relevant ShipRight procedure.

WDA2: ShipRight notation (Whipping Design Assessment Level 2) is specified when assessing the dynamic response of the hull structure due to wave impact loads (Whipping) in accordance with the relevant ShipRight procedure.


EU Notation

Passenger ships complying with the requirements of European Council Directive 98/18/EC of 17 March 1998 on safety rules and standards for passenger ships and subsequent amendments may be assigned the following markings:

EU(A): The class notation is assigned to passenger ships engaged in domestic voyages other than those subject to:

Class B, C, D.

EU(B): The class notation is assigned to passenger ships engaged in domestic voyages.

It corresponds to the mid-tide level, i.e. more than 20 miles from the coastline where a wreck may land.

EU(C): The class notation is assigned to passenger ships engaged in domestic voyages in seas where the probability of exceeding a significant wave height of 2.5 m is less than 10% throughout the year. Circular operations or only during a specific limited period of the year (e.g. summer operations) and during that period not more than 15 miles from a shelter or not more than 5 miles from the shoreline where a wrecked person can land. Miles corresponding to mid-tide.

EU(D): The class notation is assigned to passenger ships engaged in domestic voyages in waters where there is less than a 10% chance of significant wave heights exceeding 1.5 m throughout the year. Circular operations or only during a specific limited period of the year (e.g. summer operations) and during that period not more than 6 miles from a shelter or not more than 3 miles from the shoreline where a wrecked person can land. PAC: Comfort of Passenger Accommodation. This notation indicates that passenger accommodation meets acceptable standards.

CAC: Comfort of Crew Accommodation. This notation indicates that crew accommodation and work areas meet acceptable standards.

PCAC: Comfort of Passenger and Crew Accommodation. This notation indicates that both passenger and crew spaces meet acceptable standards.



EPN Notation

(Escort Performance Number) notation may be assigned to escort tugs performing full-scale performance tests, depending on the performance number and the requirements of the test.


(F, B, V, C) may be added to the following notations:

F : Maximum steering force in tons.

B : Maximum braking force in tons.

V : Speed ​​in knots at which F and B are determined.

C : Time in seconds required for the escort tug to maneuver while maintaining the tug’s heel position and to move to the opposite mirror position with maximum steering force on one side of the auxiliary vessel.

RIGGING Notation

Specified when a new vessel is fitted with a rig for wind propulsion in accordance with the Rules.

RIGGING* : Equipment*. Upon request, an existing vessel is fitted with a rig for wind propulsion in accordance with the Rules, and the RIGGING* notation is assigned.


Machinery Notation


✠ LMC: Designated when the propulsion and essential auxiliary machinery has been constructed, installed and tested in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the LR.

IGS: Designated when a ship for the carriage of bulk oil or bulk liquid chemicals has an approved system for producing gas for inerting cargo tanks.

UMS: Designated when the ship is arranged so that the machinery space can be operated unmanned. Indicates that the control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the LR Rules or equivalent.


​MCH Notation

• Propulsion and essential auxiliary machinery.

• Manufacturer's certificate for propulsion and essential auxiliary machinery.

• System arrangements for propulsion and essential auxiliary machinery.



CCS: Designated when the machinery is arranged so that it can be operated under the continuous supervision of a central control station. Indicates that the control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the Rules of the Classification Society or equivalent.

ICC: Designated when the control and supervision of the ship's operational functions is computer-based. Indicates that the control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with LR Rules or equivalent.

IP: May be assigned to a ship after classification if the machinery is arranged to integrate the propulsion equipment and all essential auxiliary machinery with the power plant to operate under all normal seagoing and manoeuvring conditions. The system must be controlled by the bridge and the propulsion equipment must incorporate an emergency means of propulsion in the event of a prime mover failure, and indicates that the machinery and control equipment are arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the Classification Rules.

Unmanned: Assigned when the ship is designed and constructed to be operated unmanned without crew, passengers or other occupants.

The following are the notations associated with dynamic positioning arrangements:

DP(CM): Assigned when the ship is equipped with a central remote manual control for position keeping. Indicates that the position reference system and environmental sensors, machinery and control engineering equipment are arranged, installed and tested in accordance with LR Rules or equivalent.

DP(AM) : Indicates that the mechanical and control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the rules of the classification society, or equivalent, if the vessel is equipped with automatic main and manual standby control devices for position keeping, position reference systems and environmental sensors.

DP(AA) : Indicates that the mechanical and control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the rules of the classification society, or equivalent, if the vessel is equipped with automatic main and automatic standby control devices for position keeping, position reference systems and environmental sensors.

DP(AAA) : Indicates that the mechanical and control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the rules of the classification society, or equivalent, if the vessel is equipped with automatic main and automatic standby control devices for position keeping, additional/emergency automatic control devices located in separate compartments, position reference systems and environmental sensors.

PCR : Complements the DP notation. This rating indicates the calculated percentage of time that the unit can maintain its heading and position under standard environmental conditions (North Sea).

NAV1: This designation is given when the bridge arrangement and equipment level is considered suitable for routine safe operation of the vessel under the supervision of one watch officer on the bridge.


The following are the notations associated with dynamic positioning arrangements:

DP(AA): Indicates that the ship is equipped with automatic main and automatic standby control for position keeping and position reference system and environmental sensors, mechanical and control engineering equipment are arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the Rules of the Classification Society or equivalent.

DP(AAA) : Indicates that the ship is equipped with automatic main control and automatic standby control for position keeping, additional/emergency automatic control devices located in separate compartments, and position reference systems and environmental sensors, and that the mechanical and control engineering equipment is arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the rules of the classification society or equivalent.

PCR : Complements the DP notation. This class indicates the calculated percentage of time that the unit can maintain its heading and position under standard environmental conditions (North Sea).

NAV1 : This notation is assigned when the bridge arrangement and equipment level is considered suitable for routine safe operation of the ship under the supervision of one watch officer on the bridge.

IBS : This notation is assigned when an integrated bridge system is installed to provide electronic chart display, route planning and automatic route tracking, centralised navigation information display and bridge alarm management. In addition to meeting the rules of the classification society or equivalent for navigation integration, to assign this notation:

(a) The arrangement of the bridge and its equipment shall meet the requirements of relevant international or national ergonomic or human-centered design standards or an equivalent standard to that of the Classification Society.

(b) The notation NAV1 shall also be assigned.

(c) Where the bridge is not intended to carry a regular one-man watch, the arrangement of the bridge and its equipment shall meet the NAV1 notation assignment requirements to the satisfaction of the LR, except as follows: In such cases, the requirements identified by the Classification Society's rules which may be relaxed shall be satisfied.

✠ LMC, [✠ ] LMC, ✠ ˙ LMC and MCH notations are not normally assigned to non-propulsion vessels, but individual cases will be considered on merit.

Let's learn about special features (machinery special features)

OPS: Designated when the mechanical, electrical and control engineering equipment installed on board the ship has been evaluated to allow continuous operation of the service by connection to an external power supply.

PM: Designated when a position mooring system is fitted. This notation may be supplemented by the thrust assist notation (T1) [or (T2) or (T3)].

PMC: Designated when a position mooring system is fitted for mooring close to another vessel or installation. This notation is supplemented by the thrust assist notation (T1) [or (T2) or (T3)].

LTMOO (R): Designated when a position mooring system is fitted to an offshore, offshore or offshore terminal that complies with the requirements of Part 3, Chapter 10, Chapter 16, Long-Term Offshore Position Mooring Systems of the Marine Structure Classification Rules and Regulations. July 2022.


The following are notations related to machinery redundancy

PMR: Designated where the main propulsion system is arranged so that in the event of a single failure of the equipment, the ship will maintain not less than 50% of the installed prime mover capacity, and not less than 50% of the maximum capacity. Installed propulsion system. This also indicates that the installation has been arranged, installed and tested in accordance with the rules of the Classification Society.

PMR*: Designated where the main propulsion system is arranged so that in the event of a single failure of the equipment, the ship will maintain not less than 50% of the installed prime mover capacity, and not less than 50% of the maximum capacity. Where the propulsion system and machinery are installed in separate compartments, so that in the event of the loss of one compartment, the ship will maintain propulsion.

SMR + SMR*: Designated where the steering system for steering is arranged so that in the event of a single failure of the steering gear equipment, or in the event of loss of the steering power supply or control system, the steering function will continue to be available.

PSMR +PSMR* : Assigned when the main propulsion and steering system is configured to maintain at least 50% of the installed prime mover capacity in the event of a single equipment failure. The propulsion system of the cent is installed and maintains steering capability.

CAC1 : (or 2 or 3)

Assigned when assessing noise and vibration levels in crew quarters and work areas. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 indicate the acceptable standards against which noise and vibration levels are assessed. It is intended primarily for passenger ships. However, compliance of all ships can be assessed upon request.

PAC1 : (or 2 or 3)

Assigned when assessing noise and vibration levels in passenger cabins. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 indicate:

PCAC1 : (or 2 or 3), (1, 2 or 3)

Specified when assessing the noise and vibration levels in passenger and crew spaces. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 indicate the acceptable standards for which the noise and vibration levels were assessed.

The first is for passenger accommodation.

The second is for crew comfort, which is intended primarily for passenger ships. However, compliance of all ships can be assessed upon request.

LFPF(xx, yy) : Notation related to the use of low flashpoint fuels.

BWTS : Specified for ships with an approved and installed ballast water treatment system (BWTS).

BWTS* : Specified for ships with a type approval and approved BWTS according to the approval procedure.

EGCS : Specified where a SOx emission reduction facility has been designed, constructed, arranged, installed and tested.

The application of the EGCS notation does not mean that the facility complies with the legal requirements for emission control. This notation must be supplemented by one of the following relevant notations, depending on the type of emission reduction equipment installed:

(Open) An open wet scrubber is installed that does not have the capacity to operate in zero discharge mode.

(Closed) A closed loop wet scrubber is installed that can only operate in zero discharge mode.

(Hybrid) An installed wet scrubber can operate in both open loop and closed loop modes.

(Dry) A dry scrubber is installed.

EGCN: Designated where NOx emission reduction facilities have been designed, constructed, arranged, installed and tested.


The application of the EGCN notation does not imply that the facility complies with the legal requirements for emission control. This notation must be supplemented by the following relevant notations:

(SCR) Selective catalytic reduction installed.

(EGR) Exhaust gas recirculation installed.

Hybrid Power: Designated to ships with power systems that meet the ship's primary power needs by combining two or more different types of power sources or by utilizing stored electrical energy.

Hybrid Power(+): Designated to ships that meet the requirements for hybrid power and the additional optional requirements for Hybrid Power(+) specified in Part 6, Chapter 2, Section 24 Hybrid Power Systems. The additional optional requirements are aimed at providing improved power system performance achieved by considering system simulation, system integration and power system reliability during normal or reasonably foreseeable abnormal operation.


Class notations (Environmental Protection)


ABN: Assigned when the ship's airborne noise has been measured and certified in accordance with LR's ShipRight Additional Design and Construction Procedures for Determining Airborne Noise Emissions of Marine Vessels, and the pressure is: less than the assessment criteria limits included in the records. The letter relating to the most stringent assessment criteria limits that the ship's airborne noise meets must be included.


ECO: Assigned when the ship is designed and operated in accordance with the relevant requirements of the Rules.


ECO(TOC): Assigned when the environmental protection measures follow the requirements of another recognized classification society and are essentially the same as the Rule requirements and the ship is operated in accordance with the relevant requirements of the Rules.

UWN-M: Assigned when the ship's underwater radiated noise has been measured and certified in accordance with ShipRight Procedure Additional Design and Construction Procedures for Determining Underwater Radiated Noise of Ships.


UWN-L( ) : Assigned when the ship's underwater radiated noise has been measured and certified in accordance with the ShipRight Procedure Additional Design and Construction Procedure for Determining the Underwater Radiated Noise and Underwater Radiated Noise Profile of a Ship. The curve has been determined to be less than the limits contained in the ShipRight Procedure. The limits set by and listed in the ShipRight Procedure must be included in parentheses.

ShaftRight : Assigned when main propulsion shaft alignment is performed in accordance with the Main Propulsion Shaft Alignment Procedure. A ShaftRight() explanatory note with one or more of the following relevant supplementary letters in parentheses may be assigned:

E : Existing Design. Applicable to ships with main propulsion shafts and hull arrangements that have been previously implemented and have a proven satisfactory service experience.

N : New Design. Applicable to new main propulsion shaft arrangements within a new or previously implemented hull design.

BWMP() : This ShipRight explanatory note (ballast water management plan) is assigned when the requirements of the relevant ShipRight Procedure are complied with. A descriptive note BWMP() with one or more of the following relevant supplementary letters, shown in parentheses, detailing the method used may be assigned:

S : Sequential method.

F : Flow-through method.

D : Dilution method.

T : Treatment method.

DIST() : ShipRight descriptive note (Machine Suitable for Distillate Fuel Operation) is assigned when a particular piece of machinery is suitable for distillate fuel operation in accordance with the relevant ShipRight procedure. A descriptive note DIST() with one or more of the following relevant supplementary letters, shown in parentheses, detailing the given piece of machinery may be assigned:

M : Main engine.

AB : Auxiliary engine and boiler.

I : Incinerator.

IG : Inert gas generator.

(IHM): List of Hazardous Materials


COW(LR) : LR Certified Crude Oil Washing

BIO : A Biofouling Management Plan has been developed in accordance with MEPC.207(62) and is available on board for review by LR.

CRM : Cargo Residue Minimization. Cargo residues are defined by MARPOL Annex II, Reg. 12 (individual cargo tanks shall not contain more than 60 litres of residue in the tank and associated piping).

EAL : Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant. Ships must use EALs that comply with EPA criteria as defined in Sec.

EEDI-3 : The EEDI achieved is below the applicable threshold for Phase 3. (Available for ships built before 1 January 2025).

EnMS : Ship is certified to ISO 50001 Energy Management System.

GW : Greywater. Sewage treatment plant for greywater treatment (additional equipment as required). Or the heavy water may be discharged to shore.




IBTS: Integrated Bilge Water Treatment System shall be fitted in accordance with MEPC.1/Circ.642 & 643 as amended by MEPC.1/Circ.676 & 760.

NOx-3: Main and auxiliary diesel engines and associated NOx reduction systems certified to meet Tier 3 NOx emission limits specified in MARPOL Annex VI, Reg.13.

OW: Oily Bilge Water. All bilges shall be discharged ashore or equipped to reduce the water content of the discharge to less than 5ppm.

P: Protected Oil Tanks. All oil tanks shall be located away from the ship’s side or bottom plating as per MARPOL Annex I, Regulation 12S.

R: Refrigerants for all major refrigeration systems such as cargo systems, supply rooms and air conditioning shall be natural.

VECS-L : Vapor Emission Control System including Ship-to-Ship Transfer. Vapor Emission Control System is equipped in accordance with USCG requirements for lighter operations (tankers).

VOC-R : Vapor Emission Reduction and/or Recovery System. System is equipped to reduce VOC emissions or recover and use VOC emissions.

Value Added Services for LNG as fuel.

Risk Assessment (HAZID/HAZOP) As required by the IGF Code, risk assessment is performed by the builder as a mandatory requirement of the IGF Code. Based on previous experience in LNG DF design in Korea, LR has conducted Risk Assessment including Risk.
